Can Espresso Reduce the Chance for Heart Disease?

heart.jpg

So I know that the news always comes out in waves both good and bad about coffee, but here’s one for you, coffee may reduce the chances for heart disease in older women. No word on what a double shot of espresso would do though! A 15-year study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows fewer deaths from heart disease or other noncancerous inflammatory diseases for postmenopausal women who reported drinking at least one to three daily cups of coffee.

If coffee was responsible for those results, "the implications are considerable, being that coffee is the second most widely consumed drink worldwide," write the researchers. They included Lene Frost Andersen, PhD, of the nutrition department at Norway's University of Oslo. Coffee is a major dietary source of antioxidants, which may curb inflammation and heart disease, write Andersen and colleagues, stressing that their findings need to be confirmed.

ESE Review: Illy Medium Roast Espresso Pods

illymediumcan.jpg

The Illy coffee company is headquartered in Trieste Italy and has over 70 years experience in blending and roasting coffee, with sales of approximately $250 million. That’s not the biggest coffee brand in the world, but its not bad considering the quality of the product and the fact that it sticks to its roots of serving up a great Italian cup of espresso. The company is run by Andrea Illy, the grandson of founder Francesco Illy who started it all back in 1933.

These ESE Espresso pods are made to be used in popular makers like the Breville Café Roma, the Krups XP4050 and the Hamilton Beach 40729 espresso machines; all have the ability to use ESE Espresso pods.

Stomping Grounds - New Espresso Concentrate

group.jpg

So, if the machine is down, or you are in the mood for cold espresso drinks, the makers of Oregon Chai have come up with Stomping Grounds cold espresso concentrate. Shelf stable and ready to pour, you simply add milk, heat and drink, or if you prefer add milk, ice and drink cold; yea I like that. Probably not up to your average barista pulled espresso drink, but an alternative worth a try. You can't beat the convenience. They come in four flavors: Mocha, Espresso, Caramel, and Vanilla

Starbucks Plans for the Holidays

starbuckslogo.jpg
So you aren't planning for the holidays yet? Starbucks is. They just announced their plans to entice you this holiday season with a list of offerings that includes a KitchenAid machine will be priced at $129, trimmed in red and available only at Starbucks. They will also offer the DeLonghi Magnifica machine for $999. The DeLonghi Magnifica comes in a couple of models, but is a super-automatic machine that grinds, tamps and pulls the shot of espresso for you with the touch of a button; nice. Could it be the DeLonghi EAM3200 Magnifica Super Automatic Espresso Machine, or the DeLonghi EAM3500 Magnifica Super Automatic Espresso Machine that also froths the milk for you? Actually, it's the EAM 3400, a more rare model that is still pretty sweet on features.

Anyway, they are also bringing back the peppermint mocha, eggnog latte and Christmas Blend coffee. The company will sell felt stockings and carrier bags for $4.95 each that can hold a pound of coffee, biscotti and other Starbucks items costing $20 or less.

Starbucks will also sell an audiobook version of ``The Night Before Christmas'' read by actress Meryl Streep. Other audiobooks include ``Thumbelina'' and ``Rip Van Winkle'' that are read by actors such as Nicolas Cage and Anjelica Huston.

Amazon Selling Groceries

Word came out officially that Amazon is selling groceries, the online category that held the most promise and flamed out most dazzlingly at the end of the Internet bubble. Does anyone remember Web Van? Anyway, Amazon is now selling a lot of non-perishables at their site, including coffee for the mass market. They are not however expanding their selection of ESE pods – no surprise, ESE pods are not the volume item that let’s say cold cereal is, but hey one can only dream. Amazon does however offer “Gourmet Food” at their site, and they feature many ESE pods from several vendors, including Aloha Island Kona Coffee, Starbucks, PodMerchant, Illy, and Lavazza. Not a bad start, better than my local grocer.

Frothing Pitcher and Termometer Set

frothingthermnpitcher.jpg

Besides the coffee, the brewer and the cups, what’s needed for a nice cappuccino or a latte? The frothing pitcher. Well, we found a frothing pitcher and thermometer set that can help you make better capp’s in no time. The thermometer is a key part of getting he milk just right – if you don’t steam the milk long enough you get a cold cappuccino, if you froth too long, you get funky ruined milk. We recently posted a story about some great tutorials from Gimme! Coffee of Ithaca, NY that tells you how to get great textured milk with little designs on top. The key is to get the milk between 140F and 150F – so go out and get a thermometer! If you already have a pitcher and need a thermometer – take a look at this frothing thermometer set with a nice big readout and a clip to grab onto the side of your frothing pitcher.

Exploding Espresso Machine Recalled

OUCH from Australia...

"Playcorp was recalling one of its coffee makers after a small number of the products were found to explode when heated on stove tops. The company is recalling its Evans & Taylor Milano Espresso Maker, which was sold in two-cup (150ml), four-cup (210ml) and six-cup (350ml) varieties."

That would wake you up in the morning a little more than a double shot of espresso that you were waiting on. Hopefully no one was hurt by these things.

Bodum Pavina Double-Wall Glasses

We’ve got a lot of espresso cups and mugs here to play with but one that I keep coming back to is the Bodum Pavina Double-Wall Espresso/Shot Glass that we got a while back. The double wall is comfortable in the warm summer weather to hold that steamy espresso cup in the morning. Nothing shows off that beautiful espresso than the double wall glass that seems to hold the espresso suspended in mid-air. If you want something a little larger for your regular coffee, try the 9 ounce Bodum Pavina Double-Wall Thermo Glasses.

Espresso: The drink of Don Juans?

doublepoursm.jpg

A recent study has shown that Espresso changed the brain function so that people are more likely to agree with your views or be persuaded to do something that you want them to do. "There's some molecule in coffee that works on the mind's persuasion-agreement mechanism," said lead researcher Pearl Martin of Queensland University . Martin and her research group tried to change peoples’ minds about complex subjects like abortion and euthanasia. "The test group, which discussed the issues over a nice steaming espresso or cappuccino, were much more inclined to be flexible or to change their minds completely," Martin said .

Humm, so next time you are on a hot date, maybe you need to stop by for a nice espresso or cappuccino to finish off the night.

singleserveespresso.com RSS - Our Really Simple Syndicated Feed

We wanted to let you know you can read singleserveespresso.com everyday by either coming to the web site or by reading our RSS feed. We want to be able to deliver singleserveespresso.com in as many formats as possible so you can read it when, where and how you want.

RSS means Really Simple Syndication. To use it, you need an application on your computer that reads XML files. This application is called a feed reader or aggregator. Basically what happens then is this: you type in the address of the RSS feed you want updates on, and every time something new happens on that site, it just pops into your feed reader. No more traveling around to your favorite links to see if they've been updated, you just let the feed reader do it for you.

One of the easiest ways to read singleserveespresso.com is to add it to your My.Yahoo page. Click here to add it to your My.Yahoo page.

If you don't have a My.Yahoo page, you'll need a feed reader. We recommend FeedDemon for PC users and NewsFire for Mac users. However if you have a Macintosh you can use the built in Safari browser to read our feed. I use Safari myself and love it. You can also view it on the web using BlogLines.

Once you've installed it, copy the URL of any feed you want into the reader and you're on your way.

We have also made it very easy to subscribe to the singleserveespresso.com Feed by using the options below:
