Crème de la Crema - Barista Certification

You’re a good Barista but are you certified? Maybe not, but Australia may be moving in that direction soon. Fed up with arrogant baristas who are turning out sub-par cups of espresso, the AustralAsian Specialty Coffee Association is starting to explore a certification program that will set standards for what baristas need to know form coffee knowledge to customer service standards.

Amazon Selling Groceries

Word came out officially that Amazon is selling groceries, the online category that held the most promise and flamed out most dazzlingly at the end of the Internet bubble. Does anyone remember Web Van? Anyway, Amazon is now selling a lot of non-perishables at their site, including coffee for the mass market. They are not however expanding their selection of ESE pods – no surprise, ESE pods are not the volume item that let’s say cold cereal is, but hey one can only dream. Amazon does however offer “Gourmet Food” at their site, and they feature many ESE pods from several vendors, including Aloha Island Kona Coffee, Starbucks, PodMerchant, Illy, and Lavazza. Not a bad start, better than my local grocer.

USA Places Third at World Barista Championships

The World Barista Championships occurred recently and Matt Riddle of Intelligentsia Coffee came in third place. The competition follows the US championships and included over 30 competitors from around the world. Cups of espresso and cappuccions must have been flying there! The competition has each competitor prepare several espresso and cappuccinos for the judges tables as well as a specicalty drink, all in under 17 minutes. The winner was Klaus Thomsen, of Denmark, followed by Sammy Piccolo, of Canada. If you want to read a good write up on the competition, see the notes from Cindy Chang over at Counter Culture who is the US contact for the WBC.

Exploding Espresso Machine Recalled

OUCH from Australia...

"Playcorp was recalling one of its coffee makers after a small number of the products were found to explode when heated on stove tops. The company is recalling its Evans & Taylor Milano Espresso Maker, which was sold in two-cup (150ml), four-cup (210ml) and six-cup (350ml) varieties."

That would wake you up in the morning a little more than a double shot of espresso that you were waiting on. Hopefully no one was hurt by these things.

Espresso: The drink of Don Juans?

A recent study has shown that Espresso changed the brain function so that people are more likely to agree with your views or be persuaded to do something that you want them to do. "There's some molecule in coffee that works on the mind's persuasion-agreement mechanism," said lead researcher Pearl Martin of Queensland University . Martin and her research group tried to change peoples’ minds about complex subjects like abortion and euthanasia. "The test group, which discussed the issues over a nice steaming espresso or cappuccino, were much more inclined to be flexible or to change their minds completely," Martin said .

Humm, so next time you are on a hot date, maybe you need to stop by for a nice espresso or cappuccino to finish off the night.

Is your Barista the Best?

Every year, the Specialty Coffee Association of America runs a competition to see who the best Barista is in the US. The United States Barista Championship (USBC) is an event designed to encourage and recognize professional achievement in the art of espresso beverage preparation and service. Competitors prepare and service 12 coffee beverages - one espresso, one cappuccino, and one signature drink of their own creation, for four judges in a space of 15 minutes. The winner of the USBC goes on to represent the United States at the World Barista Championship. Not bad, eh? Well, this year, Matt Riddle from Intelligentsia Coffee of Chicago IL won the competition and went on to the World Barista Championships in Bern Switzerland.

Check out the Full USBC results to see if your barista is among the best.
